Bomb after bomb, Disney was going downhill ever since the loss of the legendary icon Walt Disney. But then in 1989, The Little Mermaid became the start of the Disney Renaissance. It release in theaters blew everything out of the water. The animation was top notch and gorgeous, the songs were incredibly catchy and memorable, and the characters were unbelievable. And with that, Disney earned its fourth Disney Princess Ariel.
Voiced by the lovely Jodi Benson, Ariel is your typical sixteen-year-old mermaid, but she is more than just a princess. She is adventurous, independent, and will do anything to get what she wants. Some people see her as whiny, but that is how a teenage girl is, and that perfectly captures Ariel due to her age.
Because of the impact, Ariel left on Disney fans, a lot of fan art and cosplays of her are insanely common and wonderful. The fan art ranges from cute and simple to beautiful and detailed. The cosplay can just be like the meet and greet ones you see at Disney World or Land, but some go all out. It is no wonder why Ariel is one of the most popular Disney princesses ever. Even after nearly thirty years since its theatrical release, The Little Mermaid will always be a classic the young and old will certainly enjoy.

You wonder how they come up with the concept and how long it took for them to make the costume. Sometimes it ends up being quicker than the usual cosplay, as seen by Mimi Reaves' cosplay of Ariel.
This pin-up of Ariel is very ravishing, but also mild. It does not go too far, but Mimi is not afraid of taking risks. The seashell top adorned with pearls adds more detail and her shorts are frilly and cute. Plus, her hairpiece is adorable, complimenting the red hair and her outfit overall. Big props to this amazing cosplayer!
18 Not So Innocent
Strangely enough, there were not any pirates in The Little Mermaid, which is part of the world at sea. This fan art made by GarthFT turns Ariel from a sweet and caring mermaid into a vicious and sadistic pirate and mermaid hybrid. What makes this fan art unsettling is the fact that she has Eric under her grasp, but not in a romantic way.
They are clearly enemies, and it seems Ariel has the upper hand. Poor Eric would suffer from drowning or meeting the blade's cut from Ariel's sword hand. The subtle references that include Sebastian and Flounder are also nice additions. Something about the art style gives off a comic book vibe, and for what the artist had in mind, it would be an interesting one to read.

Even though Ariel technically became one, in the end, thanks to her father's trident, it is still mindboggling to think about. Even though Ariel and Triton had a rocky relationship, the fact that the latter saw how happy she was shows that he is a loving father.

Kharis-Art actually has a series revolving other Disney Princesses if they were in the Star Wars universe, and for what she has to offer, they are amazing! Unlike the other entry that has Ariel wearing Leia's slave outfit, the redhead is still in her normal apparel but decorated in tattoos, makeup, and being chained near Jabba the Hutt.
It is a thought-provoking concept of how this fan art came to be. Both Jabba and Ariel have tails, and according to the artist herself, Ariel became his favorite after capturing her. The redhead seems to have a tough persona going on, which might be the endurance she dealt with ever since being captured by the giant slug.

Lily Le Roi as the hipster really knows what she is doing. While she is not trying to exactly replicate the look Ariel gives with the hipster glasses, Lily does it with class. The outfit and the pose were also put together nicely, especially with how the picture was taken. She was so happy that she was determined to get Eric to give her true love's first kiss in order to become a human permanently. The photographer did a great job making sure that the focus was on Megan's expression and her feet since it is more than likely she was in the same predicament as Ariel. Regardless, this cosplay of some sorts is delightful and appealing.

Lolita-Artz's contest entry for Twisted Tales on deviantART gives Ariel a hauntingly beautiful image with an incredibly well-detailed background to go along with it. Something about that red smile really gives us the chills. The piranhas also add the scary aspect of this picture.
In the end, Lolita-Artz won the contest, and she definitely deserved it since this picture looks like it took up a lot of time and motivation to perfect it. It is all thanks to the original model, Fluffybunny29stock, for being able to give the artist a chance to create a beautifully thorough image. This enchanting picture of Ariel is twisted indeed.
10 Stunningly Subtle
If there is anything mermaids in pop culture have brought into the minds of young girls, they probably wanted to become mermaids despite the fact that they are nonexistent. After Ariel, a lot of them dressed up as her and tried to sing just like her. If they were to see fan art like this, then they would be creeped out greatly.
This fan art is disturbing, but that is what makes it gorgeous. Julia-Alison poured her heart out into this masterpiece and show us another way to see Ariel. The fact that this was an assignment for a graphic design class she took, hopefully, she better aced it because this is not only amazing but simply breathtaking. Art like this takes up a lot of time.

It is no wonder why there is a lot of merchandise whether it's from Disney World, Disney Land, or in stores like Hot Topic or Walmart. It might not pop out, but there is a high chance you will see something The Little Mermaid related to stores.
8 Part Of Your World
Ever since Ariel saw a ship from above the water, her curiosity got the better of her and she wanted to see what the commotion was about. What she saw was something she had never seen before. It was the first time she saw humans and even feet, something she wanted to have. When the ship was struck by lightning, Ariel managed to save Eric from drowning.
Kurt Floyd's depiction of the scene is simply beautiful.
It was love at first sight for Ariel, but to her credit, she did get to know more about Eric when he found her on shore after giving up her voice to Ursula. She started falling more in love with him and would love to spend the rest of her life with him.
7 Just Relaxing
It seems that Ariel has caught you staring at her while fixing her long red hair. Not that she would mind at all. She is a very beautiful mermaid. This fan art made by El-Gamusa-Art is not only downright gorgeous but very vibrant and lively. Everything from the detail of the water, Ariel's luscious red hair, and her fishtail is drawn fantastically.
The reason why Ariel has red hair and a green fishtail is that they are complementary colors. They contrast very well that it makes Ariel pop out whenever she moves. Her seashell top also compliments the colors since they go great together. The color for Ariel's fishtail was also named after her when creating the Disney Princess. Apparently, there is more to Ariel than we thought!

This is actually RinRinDaishi's first attempt at creating this beautiful artwork, and while the second version has improvements, the first one feels more authentic and down to earth. Unlike the other entry that has Ariel completely covered in tattoos, this one is more toned down and focuses on the emotion in this fan art.
Not only does it look peaceful, but also rather endearing. The tattoos in question have objects that relate to her, as well as having Eric's name since he is very important to her. Not to mention, the A+E inside the heart on her chest is very sweet, representing the precious relationship she formed with the prince. Good thing that they ended up getting married!
